Another Broken Promise..."
Democrats Have a Difficult Time with the Truth...When it comes to Special Interest Favors
Washington, DC – Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement today after Democrats introduced the Employee Free Choice Act, a special interest favor to Big Labor.
The Promise: “We are committed to immediate change to lead this country in a new direction, to put an end to business as usual, and to make certain this nation’s leaders serve the people’s interests, not special interests. Our responsibility to our constituents and to our nation is to represent all of the people, not just the powerful.” (Portion of A New Direction for America; proposed by House Democrats in the 109th Congress as their plan for the majority)
The Reality: “With union membership slipping, the AFL-CIO ran a full-page newspaper ad on Sunday in support of the bill. It plans a major publicity campaign with Change to Win and other groups. ‘We don’t run ads a lot,’ said AFL-CIO spokeswoman Lane Windham. ‘It’s indicative of how important this is.’” (Reuters, 2/5/07)

House Democrats have claimed that they will serve the people, not the powerful. But only a month into their new majority, and Democrats are already carrying out the marching orders of Big Labor. The Employee Free Choice Act, which strips workers of their right to secret ballot elections in union recognition, is the number one priority of unions. After generous campaign contributions, the Democrats are all too happy to execute the wishes of this special interest group.
“After $51 million in contributions, there is an apparent payoff for Big Labor,” said Price. “But who pays the price? Workers do. It appears that democratic principles and the sanctity of the secret ballot are not the concerns of the Democrat Party.”
“It is disappointing that our colleagues on the other side of the aisle are so afraid of an electoral process and would rather represent the special interests. They prefer to manufacture outcomes rather than leave them to the will of hard-working Americans.”
The Solution: Positive, Principled, Solution-Oriented Leadership
