Another Broken Promise...
Democrats Have a Difficult Time with the Truth...When it comes to Secret Ballot Elections

Washington, DC – Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement today after it was revealed that Democrats flip-flopped on secret ballot elections.

The Promise:

“As members of Congress of the United States who are deeply concerned with international labor standards and the role of labor rights in international trade agreements, we are writing to encourage you to use the secret ballot in all union recognition elections...we feel that the secret ballot is absolutely necessary in order to ensure that workers are not intimidated into voting for a union they might not otherwise choose.” (Portion of a letter from Rep. George Miller and 15 other Democrats to officials in Mexico; August 29, 2001)

The Reality:

On February 5, 2007, Rep. George Miller (D-CA) and 223 House Democrats introduced the Employee Free Choice Act, which strips workers of their right to secret ballot elections in union recognition. Carrying out the marching orders of Big Labor, Democrats are actively supporting a frontal assault on worker protections. But just five years ago, Rep. Miller – the author of the Employee Free Choice Act – favored secret ballot elections in Mexico for their workers.

“This type of flip-flopping reminds me of a certain presidential campaign,” said Price. “Apparently, Democrats were for secret ballot elections before they were against it.”

“Our colleagues believe that workers’ rights should end at the border, leaving American workers unprotected. Why should our workers endure coercion and intimidation while Mexican workers enjoy the sanctity of the secret ballot?”

The Solution:

    Positive, Principled, Solution-Oriented Leadership
