Another Broken Promise...
Democrats Have a Difficult Time with the Truth...When it comes to Serious Consideration of Policy in Iraq
Washington, DC – Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement today during the closed debate on policy in Iraq.
The Promise: At a Thursday press conference, following a Democratic Caucus meeting to discuss the content of the resolution, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) asserted: “The Republicans will be given either a substitution or a motion to recommit so that they can propose whatever substantive alternative they choose. That will also be debated."
House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel (IL) echoed those comments during the same briefing, stating: “They are going to offer their alternative and we’ll have a vote on that.” (Roll Call, February 13, 2007)
The Reality: Speaking to reporters last Thursday, Hoyer said that Republicans would be allowed a motion to recommit or an amendment to the Democratic resolution. But later on the House floor that day, he said it would be unlikely that the GOP would get any such alternative. He repeated that latter statement again on Sunday's "Meet the Press”. (The Hill, February 13, 2007)
“Before September 11th, America failed to grasp the scope of the threat posed by radical Islamists,” said Price. “Today, an enemy that is cold, calculating and will stop at nothing is actively trying to destroy our way of life. We are now in an historic moment in our nation. We have the opportunity to support our troops when it is needed most.”
“This non-binding resolution does nothing but aid our enemy. When that is coupled with the very real consequences of failure in Iraq or withdrawal, the end result would be catastrophic. Our enemies would be emboldened and we would be a weakened country in the eyes of the world. The action the House is currently contemplating is unconscionable.”
The Solution: Positive, Principled, Solution-Oriented Leadership
