Another Broken Promise...
Democrats Have a Difficult Time with the Truth...When it comes to Cutting Off Funds for the Troops
Washington, DC – Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement with Democrats on the verge of passing H.R. 1591, an emergency wartime supplemental spending bill, which will cut off funding for troops in Iraq.
The Promise: “There will be no de-funding of troops in the field.” – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (source, 2/13/07)
In an interview with CBS’ Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation, Speaker Nancy Pelosi commented that Democrats would not cut off funding, adding, “We will always be there to protect our troops and to support our troops” (1/7/07).
The Reality: “They won’t be able to continue. They won’t be able to do the deployment. They won’t have the equipment, they don’t have the training and they won’t be able to do the work. There’s no question in my mind.” – House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense Chairman Jack Murtha (Reuters, 2/15/07)
House Democrats stand on the precipice of passing H.R. 1591, a bill designed to cut off funding for troops in Iraq. Among its many provisions and stipulations, the bill withholds funds until certain certifications are made. Furthermore, the measure takes the unprecedented and dangerous step of micromanaging operations in Iraq and mandating a withdrawal. House Republicans remain united in their opposition to cutting off funding for the troops and micromanaging the war in Iraq.
“Despite what many on the left may claim, this is not the type of leadership the American people elected,” said Price. “Nowhere in the Constitution does it stipulate that the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Services is really the 535 members of Congress.”
“The timetable outlined in this disastrous, pork-laden piece of legislation will do nothing for the brave Americans fighting to preserve our freedoms and everything to short-change their efforts. It will do everything to satisfy our enemies, and it will advertise to both friend and foe alike that America’s commitments are merely political.”
The Solution: Positive, Principled, Solution-Oriented Leadership
