Another Broken Promise…
Democrats Have a Difficult Time with the Truth… When it Comes to Minority Rights

Washington, DC – Washington, DC – Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement after Democrats threatened to change the rules in the House of Representatives to minimize the Minority’s role in the legislative process.

The Promise:

“Bills should generally come to the floor under a procedure that allows open, full, and fair debate consisting of a full amendment process that grants the minority the right to offer its alternatives, including a substitute.” – Then-Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Press Release, 5/25/06)

The Reality:

Democrat Leadership has announced that they may choose to change the rules of the House of Representatives to deliberately restrict the rights of the minority party to offer a motion to recommit. A motion to recommit is the last resort and opportunity for the minority party to affect the nature of legislation. Not since 1822 have the rules regarding this type of procedure been changed in such a manner.

“Historic! Democrats are walking all over the rights of the minority with this type of action,” said Price. “Having already limited debate with closed rules and fast-tracking legislation around the committee process, Democrats now want to take away from the minority its rights to an equal voice in the debate.”

“What are they afraid of? All the talk about an open and fair legislative process was apparently nothing more than political posturing.

“This majority may hope they can strip away minority rights with an inside-the-beltway maneuver. But the American people will not stand for this outrageous abuse of power.”

The Solution:

    Positive, Principled, Solution-Oriented Leadership
