Price: “Cut, Cap, and Balance remains the only plan on paper, on the table, and passed by a bipartisan vote.”

Washington, D.C.– House Republican Policy Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) issued the following statement as Senate Democrats and the President decline to put a plan forward to address the looming debt crisis facing the nation.

“After you sort through all of the talk coming from Senate Democrats and the White House, Cut, Cap, and Balance remains the only plan on paper, on the table, and passed by a bipartisan vote. We have not seen anywhere near that level of commitment from the other side of the aisle,” said Chairman Price.  “President Obama and his Democrat colleagues have thus far been short on leadership and short on details.  This is exactly the sort of reckless behavior that created this mess in the first place.  Our debt crisis is due in part to the same type of political games currently being played by Washington Democrats.

“House Republicans have done our jobs.  We drafted, debated, and ultimately passed a plan that will successfully bring down our debt without threatening our national security or economic recovery.  The Senate’s position for the better part of this year and throughout this debate has been to do absolutely nothing.  For all their expressed concern about the threat of default on our economy, President Obama and Senate Democrats have shown absolutely no urgency to do their job and move a concrete plan through the legislative process and to the president’s desk.  House Republicans have moved this debate in a positive direction each step of the way by putting substance behind our words.”

NOTE: Cut, Cap, and Balance:

  • Cuts total spending by $111 billion in Fiscal Year 2012.
  • Puts total federal spending as a share of Gross Domestic Product on a downward trajectory, ultimately capping spending at 19.9% of GDP.
  • Requires the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment before raising the national debt limit.
